Legacy Spotlight

Who Was Edward J. Brewer

The detachment is named in honor of Marine Lance Corporal Edward Joseph Brewer of Elmira, New York, who was just twenty-one years old when he asked to leave desk duty and serve in a battle zone. He was killed by enemy fire while on patrol near Quang Nam, Vietnam, on February 6, 1968.

Brewer was remembered locally not only for his service, but also for the life he lived before enlistment. He attended Corning Community College, graduated in 1966, and had been active in athletics at Notre Dame, where he played junior varsity baseball and basketball and varsity football.

His sacrifice continued to be honored after his death through the naming of this detachment, the dedication of Brewer Memorial Stadium, a college memorial plaque, and the presentation of his awards to his parents, including the Naval Achievement Medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
